Fire Goat babies of 2027
2027 is the Fire Goat year, 丁未: Yin Fire, a candle, over the Goat, the warm earth of late summer. In saju it starts at Ipchun on Feb 4, 2027, the evening of Feb 3 in North America. Here's what saju reads in each month's babies, and the old sheep-year saying.
- Saju year starts
- At Ipchun: Feb 4, 2027, 10:46 am in Seoul · Feb 3, 8:46 pm Eastern · Feb 3, 5:46 pm Pacific
- Saju year ends
- At Ipchun 2028: Feb 4, 2028, 4:31 pm in Seoul · Feb 4, 2:31 am Eastern
- Lunar year of the Goat
- From Feb 6, 2027 in China (Feb 7, 2027 in Korea) to Jan 25, 2028 (Jan 26, 2028 in Korea)
- Born in January?
- Before Ipchun the year is still 丙午, the Fire Horse, in saju.
- The same pair
- 1907, 1967, 2027, 2087: once every 60 years.
What saju reads
A candle in warm earth
丁 is Yin Fire, which saju pictures as a candle or a lamp: a small, steady light. 未, the Goat, is the earth of late summer, and saju says it holds a little fire and wood inside (its hidden stems are 己, 丁 and 乙). Together they make a gentle, warm, homely pair.
For a baby, the year pillar is the family scene a child arrives into, one character pair of four. Saju reads the child from the Day Master, the top of the day pillar, so two Fire Goat babies born a week apart can read very differently.
1967 was the last Fire Goat year, so a 2027 baby can share a year pillar with a grandparent born in 1967, for whom 2027 is the hwangap year, the 60th birthday.

Month by month
Fire Goat babies, month by month
Saju's months start at solar terms, not on the 1st, and each has its own pillar. Here's what saju reads in each month's babies. Dates are in your time zone; a birth within a day of a change needs the exact time, so use the tool above.
壬寅
Water Tiger month
to
Ipchun · Start of spring
Spring's first month. The month's Ocean (壬) and the year's Candlelight (丁) are a pair saju calls a combination (丁壬合), read as the year's fire turning into growth. The Tiger (寅) is young wood that feeds it.
癸卯
Water Rabbit month
to
Gyeongchip · Insects awaken
The Rabbit and the Goat share saju's wood trio (亥卯未), so it's a green, growing month. Rain (癸) on top cools the year's candle: saju reads a soft, observant start.
甲辰
Wood Dragon month
to
Cheongmyeong · Clear and bright
A Tall Tree (甲) over the Dragon's damp earth (辰). Wood feeds the year's fire and the earth stores water, so saju reads an even, sturdy month.
乙巳
Wood Snake month
to
Ipha · Start of summer
Summer opens at Ipha: a Vine (乙) over the Snake's fire (巳). Wood and fire both rise, so May babies are read as warm, lively and quick to smile.
丙午
Fire Horse month
to
Mangjong · Grain in ear
The Fire Horse comes back as a month: June 2027 babies carry 丙午, the pair that named 2026. With the Goat year it forms a harmony (午未合). Saju reads a sunny, bold month with lots of fire.
丁未
Fire Goat month
to
Soseo · Lesser heat
A double 丁未: the year and the month pillars match, which only happens in a 丁未 year, once in sixty. Saju reads the year's own picture said twice: warm, earthy and loyal.
戊申
Earth Monkey month
to
Ipchu · Start of autumn
Autumn starts at Ipchu. The Mountain (戊) over the Monkey's metal (申): fire makes earth and earth makes metal, a calm chain that saju likes to see.
己酉
Earth Rooster month
to
Baengno · White dew
Garden Soil (己) over the Rooster (酉), autumn's purest metal. Saju reads a careful, precise month that grows things slowly and well.
庚戌
Metal Dog month
to
Hallo · Cold dew
Raw Steel (庚) over the Dog (戌), the branch where saju says autumn stores its fire. It's read as a strong, principled month with warmth kept inside.
辛亥
Metal Pig month
to
Ipdong · Start of winter
Winter starts at Ipdong. The Pig (亥) is water, and it's also part of the Goat's wood trio (亥卯未), so saju reads water feeding wood feeding the year's fire: a kind, generous chain.
壬子
Water Rat month
to
Daeseol · Heavy snow
Deep winter: the Ocean (壬) over the Rat (子), the most watery month of the year, and 壬 combines with the year's 丁 again (丁壬合). Saju reads a deep, imaginative month.
癸丑
Water Ox month
to
Sohan · Lesser cold
Born in January 2028? Still a Fire Goat in saju until Ipchun in February. The Ox (丑) sits opposite the Goat, a pair saju calls a clash (丑未沖), read as a lively, two-sided chart. Rain (癸) on top cools it.
An old saying
“Nine sheep in ten”, told straight
Some families in China repeat a folk saying, 十羊九不全: roughly, nine of ten people born in a sheep year won't have a full share of luck. Researchers have found signs in Chinese birth data that some parents avoid sheep-year births.
The saying is likely younger than it sounds. Folklorists point out that the sheep was long a sign of good fortune, and one story holds that the saying was once 十羊九福全, “nine sheep in ten are blessed,” until one character was swapped for a sound-alike.
We treat it as what it is: a superstition. No year makes a child unlucky, and saju doesn't read a child from the year animal alone. In Japan, for what it's worth, the last Fire Goat year, 1967, followed the hinoe-uma dip with 1,935,647 births, more than either of the two years before it.
FAQ
Fire Goat baby questions
When does the Year of the Goat start in 2027?
Two answers. Saju counts from Ipchun: Feb 4, 2027, 9:46 am Beijing time, Feb 4, 2027, 10:46 am in Seoul, which is Feb 3, 2027, 8:46 pm in Toronto and New York. The lunar calendar counts from Lunar New Year: Feb 6, 2027 in China and Feb 7 in Korea.
Is it a Goat, a Sheep or a Ram?
All three. The branch 未 goes with 羊 in Chinese, a word for both goats and sheep, so English calendars say Goat, Sheep or Ram for the same year. In Korea it's usually the sheep (양).
My baby is due in January 2027. Will they be a Fire Goat?
Not in saju. Until Ipchun in early February 2027 the year is still 丙午, the Fire Horse. Babies born from Ipchun to Lunar New Year (Feb 6 in China, Feb 7 in Korea) are Goats in saju and Horses by the lunar calendar.
Is the Year of the Goat unlucky for babies?
No. A folk saying in China calls sheep-year births unlucky, and some families still repeat it, but it's a superstition. Saju reads a child from the Day Master and all eight characters, not from the year animal alone.
Can I see my baby's chart before they're born?
Only roughly: the year and the month. The Day Master changes every day and the hour pillar every two hours, so come back with the real date and time. No chart is a reason to choose a delivery date; that's for you and your care team.
When was the last Fire Goat year?
1967. The pair 丁未 comes round every 60 years: 1907, 1967, 2027, 2087. That makes 2027 the hwangap year, the 60th birthday, for people born in 1967.
