Hwangap · 還甲 · the 60th birthday
The traditional calendar names years in a cycle of sixty. 1967 was 丁未, the Fire Goat, and 2027 is 丁未 again: the first time since your parent was born. In Korea that 60th birthday is hwangap, a big family occasion.

What hwangap is
East Asian calendars name each year with a pair of characters: one of ten heavenly stems over one of twelve earthly branches. The pairs run in a cycle of sixty, so the pair you were born under comes back only once in a usual lifetime, at sixty. Korean calls that birthday hwangap (환갑, 還甲, “the cycle returns”) or hoegap (회갑, 回甲).
It's the 60th birthday as most of the world counts. In the traditional Korean count, where a baby starts at one, it's the 61st, which is why Korean sources say 61. Records of it go back at least to 1296, and by the late Joseon era it had become one of the great family rites.
The classic hwangap has a tall table of food stacked high (keunsang, 큰상), and the children and grandchildren bow and offer drinks to the parent. Now that most people live well past sixty, many families keep it simpler: a dinner, a trip, a family photo, a gift that says the day mattered.
The sixty pairs, each dot coloured by its stem's element. 丁未 sits at the top: 1967, and again in 2027.
Why 1967 meets 2027
1967 is 丁未: 丁, Yin Fire, a candle, over 未, the Goat. 2027 is the same pair. Saju starts each year at Ipchun, the solar term around Feb 4, not on Jan 1 and not at Lunar New Year.
Born Feb 5 to Dec 31, 1967: a Fire Goat (丁未). Their year comes home at Ipchun 2027.
Born Jan 1 to Feb 4, 1967: saju still counts 1966's year, 丙午, the Fire Horse, until Ipchun (Feb 4, 1967, 9:30 pm in Seoul). Their year came home in 2026, and their 60th birthday in early 2027 still falls inside it.
Born Feb 4 to Feb 8, 1967: a Goat in saju, but Lunar New Year 1967 was Feb 9, so by the lunar calendar the family may call them a Horse. On Feb 4 itself, the hour decides.
The checker at the top works this out from their birthday, for any year.

FAQ
Hwangap (환갑, 還甲) is the Korean 60th birthday. The traditional calendar names years in a cycle of 60 pairs, so at 60 a person's birth-year pair comes back for the first time. It's also called hoegap (회갑, 回甲).
The 60th, counting the way most of the world does. In the traditional Korean count a baby starts at one, so the same birthday is called the 61st, which is why Korean sources say 61.
Their 60th birthday is in January 2027, and families celebrate on the birthday. In saju, anyone born before Ipchun (Feb 4, 1967, 9:30 pm in Seoul) belongs to 丙午, the Fire Horse year, which came home in 2026; their January 2027 birthday still falls inside that returning year.
Traditionally a feast around a tall, stacked table of food (keunsang, 큰상), with the children bowing and offering drinks to the parent. With longer lives the big party has become less central, and many families keep it simpler: a dinner, a trip, a family photo or a gift.
