Why sites disagree

Your day, not your year

Most zodiac sites read your element from your birth year: 1990 was a Metal Horse year, so they call everyone born in 1990 Metal. That year element is real, and saju uses it too. It just isn't the character saju calls you.

Saju writes your birth as four pillars: year, month, day and hour. The top character of the day pillar is your Day Master (일간, 日干). It changes every day in a cycle of ten, so friends born the same year usually have different ones.

Same year, different Day Masters

  • Born May 10, 1990The Vine · Yin Wood (乙)
  • Born May 11, 1990The Sun · Yang Fire (丙)

Both are Metal Horses by year. A day apart, saju reads them as two different people.

Born in January or early February? Saju's year starts at Ipchun, around Feb 4, so you may belong to the year before. Check both calendars.

Five elements, each in a yang form (outgoing, big) and a yin form (inward, fine). Saju gives each one a picture from nature.

How it works

Your birthday, read at noon

The calculator reads your date at noon. That's right for almost everyone, because a Day Master only changes at midnight.

Saju uses true solar time: the sun's clock where you were born, not the time zone on the wall. The two can be an hour or more apart, so a birth between 10 pm and 2 am can belong to the day before or after. Where the clock runs far ahead of the sun, as in Spain in summer or western China on Beijing time, that reaches 3 am. If that's you, add your birth time and city in the next step and the episode reads your exact day.

Some schools start the new day at 11 pm, the start of the Rat hour (子時). Fatescroll starts it at midnight, solar time, so a calculator that follows the 11 pm rule can disagree for late-night births.

Questions

Day Master FAQ

What is a Day Master?

In saju (the Korean Four Pillars, BaZi in Chinese) your birth is written as four pillars: year, month, day and hour. The top character of the day pillar is your Day Master (일간, 日干), the one that stands for you. There are ten: the five elements, each in a yang and a yin form, from Yang Wood (甲) to Yin Water (癸).

Why do other sites give me a different element?

Most zodiac sites read your element from your birth year, so everyone born in 1990 is told they are Metal. Saju uses the year too, but the character it calls you is your Day Master, which comes from your birth day. Friends born the same year usually have different ones.

Do I need my birth time?

Not for the Day Master, unless you were born between 10 pm and 2 am (up to 3 am where the clock runs far ahead of the sun, as in Spain in summer or western China). Saju uses true solar time at your birthplace, which can move a late-night birth into the next or previous day. The time also adds your hour pillar, and your birth city sets the solar time for the full Four Pillars.

Why does another calculator disagree with this one?

Usually for one of three reasons: it gives your year element instead of your day; it reads the clock time instead of true solar time; or it follows the school that starts the new day at 11 pm, at the start of the Rat hour (子時). Fatescroll starts the day at midnight, solar time. For births away from midnight, every careful calculator agrees.

Is my Day Master my personality?

Saju reads it as the core of the chart, the way you meet the world, and the other seven characters change the story a lot. It is a traditional picture, not a test result. Fatescroll is for entertainment and self-reflection.
