What saju reads

Two fires and one baby

Every year in the 60-year cycle is a pair: a heavenly stem over an earthly branch. 2026 pairs 丙, Yang Fire, which saju pictures as the sun, with 午, the Horse, the branch of midsummer, which is fire too. Saju reads the pair as bright, warm, sociable and quick.

For a baby, though, the year pillar is one character pair of four. Saju treats it as the family scene a child arrives into, and reads the child from the Day Master, the top of the day pillar. Many 2026 babies have plenty of fire in their charts; how much, and what it means for them, depends on the month, the day and the hour.

Baby's birthday

Most parents know it to the minute (it's on the hospital card). It sets the hour pillar, the last two of the eight characters.

Month by month

Fire Horse babies, month by month

Saju's months start at solar terms, not on the 1st, and each has its own pillar. Here's what saju reads in each month's babies. Dates are in your time zone; a birth within a day of a change needs the exact time, so use the tool above.

  1. 庚寅

    Metal Tiger month

    to

    Ipchun · Start of spring

Spring's first month. The Tiger and the Horse belong to the same fire trio in saju (寅午戌), so these babies are read with plenty of warmth and drive. Raw Steel (庚) on top of the month is the one cool, sharp note.

  2. 辛卯

    Metal Rabbit month

    to

    Gyeongchip · Insects awaken

A Rabbit month is pure spring wood, and saju reads wood as fuel for the year's fire. The month's Jewel (辛) and the year's Sun (丙) are a pair saju calls a combination (丙辛合), read as the year's heat softening a little.

  3. 壬辰

    Water Dragon month

    to

    Cheongmyeong · Clear and bright

The first watery month of the year: the Ocean (壬) over the Dragon's damp earth (辰), the branch saju calls a store of water. It's read as the year's fire meeting its match, so many April babies get a cooler, more even start.

  4. 癸巳

    Water Snake month

    to

    Ipha · Start of summer

Summer begins at Ipha. The Snake (巳) is a fire branch, so the year's fire grows; the Rain on top (癸) is the cool note. Saju reads a bright, quick, curious month.

  5. 甲午

    Wood Horse month

    to

    Mangjong · Grain in ear

The fire peak: a Horse month in a Horse year, with a Tall Tree (甲) feeding both. These are some of the most fire-heavy year and month pillars there are. Saju reads warmth, energy and a love of being seen, and looks to the day and hour for water to balance it.

  6. 乙未

    Wood Goat month

    to

    Soseo · Lesser heat

The Horse and the Goat are one of saju's six harmony pairs (午未合), so July babies get a year and month that pull the same way. Late summer earth (未) holds the heat; a Vine (乙) grows on top.

  7. 丙申

    Fire Monkey month

    to

    Ipchu · Start of autumn

Autumn starts at Ipchu. A second Sun (丙) shines over the Monkey (申), the first metal branch of the year. Saju reads a bright month that also carries the first cool, crisp air of autumn.

  8. 丁酉

    Fire Rooster month

    to

    Baengno · White dew

Candlelight (丁) over the Rooster (酉), autumn's purest metal. Fire still sits on top, with polished metal underneath: saju reads a sharp eye for detail.

  9. 戊戌

    Earth Dog month

    to

    Hallo · Cold dew

The Dog is the third member of the Horse's fire trio (寅午戌), and the Mountain (戊) sits on top. Saju reads a warm, steady month: the year's fire settling into ground.

  10. 己亥

    Earth Pig month

    to

    Ipdong · Start of winter

Winter begins at Ipdong. The Pig (亥) is the first water branch, so the year's fire meets real water for the first time in months. Garden Soil (己) on top: saju reads a gentle, thoughtful mix.

  11. 庚子

    Metal Rat month

    to

    Daeseol · Heavy snow

The Rat sits opposite the Horse on the twelve-branch wheel, a pair saju calls a clash (子午沖). It's read as a lively, two-sided chart: fire in the year, deep winter water in the month. In saju a clash means movement, not trouble.

  12. 辛丑

    Metal Ox month

    to

    Sohan · Lesser cold

Born in January 2027? Still a Fire Horse in saju, because the year turns at Ipchun in February. The Ox (丑) is cold, wet winter earth, and the Jewel (辛) pairs with the year's Sun again (丙辛合). Saju reads a calm, patient finish to a fiery year.

Hinoe-uma, 1966

The 1966 story, told straight

In Japan the same pair is read hinoe-uma. A folk belief that grew up in the Edo period held that girls born in a hinoe-uma year would be hot-tempered and bring misfortune to their husbands. Popular theatre tied it to Yaoya Oshichi, a greengrocer's daughter in Edo who was executed in 1683 for setting a fire. Later tellings say she was born in 1666, a hinoe-uma year; other records suggest 1667.

In 1966 the belief showed up in the numbers. Japan's ministry of health recorded about a quarter fewer births than the year before, and the total fertility rate fell from 2.14 to 1.58, then rose to 2.23 in 1967. Sociologist Kikkawa Tōru found no sign of more abortions that year and concludes that many young couples planned around it.

It's a superstition, and one that only ever targeted girls. A birth year can't make anyone hot-tempered or unlucky in marriage. Saju itself doesn't read a whole year's babies as one person: the year pillar is two characters of eight, and the Day Master comes from the day. A Fire Horse baby is simply a baby born in a bright, warm year.

FAQ

Fire Horse baby questions

Is 2026 the year of the Fire Horse?

Yes. 2026 is 丙午 (byeong-o in Korean, hinoe-uma in Japanese): Yang Fire over the Horse. In saju it runs from Ipchun, Feb 4, 2026, 5:02 am in Seoul (Feb 3, 2026, 3:02 pm Eastern), to Ipchun 2027. By the lunar calendar the Horse year runs from Lunar New Year, Feb 17, 2026, to Feb 5, 2027 (Feb 6 in Korea).

My baby was born in January 2026. Are they a Fire Horse?

Not yet. Before Ipchun in early February the saju year is still 乙巳, the Wood Snake, and before Feb 17 it's the Snake by the lunar calendar too. Babies born from Ipchun to Feb 16 are Horses in saju and Snakes by the lunar calendar, so families sometimes give two different answers.

Is it bad luck to have a Fire Horse baby?

No. The worry comes from a Japanese folk superstition about girls born in hinoe-uma years, not from saju's reading of the year. Saju reads a child from the Day Master and all eight characters; the year is one of them.

What does saju read in a Fire Horse baby?

丙 is the sun and 午, the Horse, is high summer, so the year pillar holds two fire characters: saju's picture is bright, warm and on the move. That's the family scene of the chart. What saju reads in your child depends on their Day Master and how the rest of the chart balances the fire.

When is the next Fire Horse year?

2086. The same pair comes round once every 60 years: 1906, 1966, 2026, 2086.

How do I find my baby's Day Master?
